The unique design of this bird box helps stop birds abandoning the nest due to the box overheating, a common issue with a lot of bird box's on the market. My design is a two layered box, a box within a box so to speak. The inner nest box is surrounded by a second layer of timber with an air gap in between for ventilation, effectively creating an air conditioned bird box.
Also attached to the front of my bird box is an Indian Myna baffle. This is the timber screen in front of the bird box opening. The baffle has a two factor application.
Mynas don't like to climb to gain access into a nest, they like to fly directly to the opening, this screen forces them to climb.
Also it hides the opening from the Myna's line of sight. This also applies for other predator birds as well.
Construction material is new untreated Merbau timber with stainless steel and galvanized fixings. I always recommend NOT to paint the box with any wood preserver, paint or oil products as birds prefer the natural look and are put off by the smell of preservers regardless of whether they are organic products or not. Eventually the box will turn grey from weathering but this will only improve the likely hood of attracting breeding birds to the box.
The bird box measurements are 550mm high x 300mm wide x 190mm deep. Weight is 13kgs,
Species of birds you might find using the bird box. Parrots, Galah's, Rosellas, Lorikeets, Corellas, Australian Owlet - Nightjar and most other medium sized bird that use hollows to nest in. Not recommended for the larger species such as Owls, Kookaburras, Cockatoos however I do have a larger box available for these birds.
