This chair is NOT for sale. It is included here as an example of what will happen to a wooden item if its left outside for nature to do it's thing. I built this chair back in 1991 from raw untreated hardwood. It has never had any wood preserver of any sort applied to it, ever....

What is the practical use for a chair like this?

Meaning an untreated timber item that lives 100% outdoors and receives 0% maintenance. As opposed to my other timber items that have been treated with deck oil or Tung oil to enhance their looks, which for all intents and purposes should be maintained if you want to keep that quality look. The level of maintenance will vary of course depending on whether the item is under cover , fully outdoors or fully indoors.

Why I like this chair and how I use it.

My family and I Live in a rural area on a16 acre hobby farm. This chair is situated in the garden at our fire pit, it is one of two permanent seats there. We do not use the chair for day to day use and when the fire pit is in use we usually need to add more chairs to the area anyway.

The truth is, our fire pit area has very low frequency use as an actual fire pit. Most of the time it is used to burn fallen tree limbs and other garden waste, so to me it is known as the burn pile area. To most of my family and our friends though it's known as the fire pit area because that's what they see it being used for. So even though it's practical use far outweighs its social use we still try to maintain the area and keep it looking nice and inviting. That's how we use our chair but the best part of this type of set and forget chair is the fact that it's 100% maintenance free. The main use for our chair is as a practical and simple rest point when we're out in the garden working. And once it gets covered in Lichen and moss like this one is, they look fantastic. It looks like it could have been there for 100 years. We love it.
